DIEM25 Webinar Series - Reparatory Justice in Europe

Das Ereignis

Launch of the DIEM25 Webinar Series - Reparatory Justice in Europe: From Colonial Legacies to Present-Day Struggles

Bringing together activists, researchers and organisations, this webinar series will explore the histories, demands and strategies of reparations movements in the Caribbean and Europe. Across the sessions, we will trace the historical roots of colonial injustice, examine how colonial legacies continue to shape global inequalities today, and discuss the possibilities for building a reparations movement in Europe.

Session 1 - Colonial Global Economy and European Capitalist Modernity

With Professor Gurminder K. Bhambra

17 November (18:00–19:30 CET)

Before turning to contemporary demands for reparations, our first session will lay the historical foundations for understanding them. How did colonialism and empire shape the making of European societies, economies and institutions? Whose histories and contributions have been excluded from dominant narratives of European development?

The session will explore these questions by examining the relationship between colonialism, the global economy and the emergence of European capitalist modernity.

About the speaker

Professor Gurminder K. Bhambra is Professor of Historical Sociology at the University of Sussex and a leading scholar in postcolonial and decolonial sociology. Her work challenges Eurocentric accounts of modernity by placing colonialism, empire and global interconnections at the centre of our understanding of European societies and institutions. Among her numerous publications, she co-authored Colonialism and Modern Social Theory with John Holmwood. She has also contributed to the House of European History's Postcolonial? exhibition as a member of its Academic Advisory Group.
